George
Turner Jr.
(Canadian 1910-1993)
b. Glasgow, Scotland,
February 28, 1910
d. Toronto,
Born in Scotland in 1910, George Turner
immigrated to Canada with his family in
1920 and initially went to St. Boniface in Winnipeg before the family
settled in west Toronto.
His father, George Sr., and grandfather,
John Turner, were trained artists. John was a portrait painter by
profession.
George obtained a BA and MA from the University
of Toronto. He received his formal art training at OAC. He studied
painting with other like-minded struggling Toronto artists in the 1930s
and 40s, having gone on several painting expeditions throughout Ontario,
Quebec and the Maritimes.
His early works showed European influence,
but his later works adopted a more typically Canadian 'Group of Seven' style.
He painted in both watercolour and oils and produced a large number of
linocut and woodblock prints.
Turner taught Art and Drafting at various
Toronto high schools including Central Technical School where he was
department head and a colleague of Doris McCarthy. George retired as
Principal and would later serve as an administrator at George Brown
College.
George Turner Jr.
is included in the The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) database
of Canadian artists. CLICK

Art Deco /
Medieval Hunting Scene
Oil on Canvas
Approx. 8 ft x 8 ft.
Circa 1925-1935
Canadian School
A large unstretched canvas that appears to be either a backdrop for a
theatrical production or perhaps a hanging mural in an early cinema house
etc.. It is a stylized Art Deco
interpretation of a Medieval hunting scene. (A favourite motif of the era)
It has numerous small areas of missing paint but nothing that distracts
from the composition as a whole. No significant holes or tears with the
exception of the extreme margins. These areas would be utilized to stretch
the painting. It is in remarkably good shape.
A striking
composition, beautifully executed.
