The Studio was the preeminent art journal of the Arts
and Crafts movement. Founded in 1893 by Charles Holmes in London, it
promoted an equal presentation of the fine and applied arts.
The issues from the
outset of publication until roughly the turn of the century often
carried original works of art commissioned especially by The Studio.
Many new talents were showcased along with acknowledged masters.
Included in this illustrious group were Joseph Pennell, Robert Anning
Bell, Emil Orlik, August Lepere, Aubrey Beardsley, William Nicholson,
T.R. Way, Felix Vallotton and most significantly, James McNeill Whistler
who contributed five original lithographs between 1894 and 1897.
