Les Maitres de l'Affiche (1895-1900)

Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.

The varied selection of prints were sold in a package of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. On sixteen occasions during the selling period between December of 1895 through November of 1900, the monthly package included a bonus of a specially created lithograph. Enormously successful, today the Maîtres de l'Affiche works are as rare as the original large format images and much in demand by collectors from around the world.

Each overall plate measures approximately 11 3/8 in. x 15 3/4 in. (29cm x 40cm). The actual poster image varies in size within the sheet, as the larger version posters were printed in varied sizes. Therefore, each has a margin (border) around the actual poster image.

Les Modes Feminines Du XIX Siecle

Original Drypoint Etchings with Colour

From the limited portfolio

by

Henri Boutet (French 1851-1919)

Fine hand-coloured drypoint etching in a limited edition of 600.

Paris 1902.

Initialed in the plate.

Printed to heavy cream wove, at 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches.

Henri Boutet was a skillful etcher, lithographer and designer of immense popularity. His favorite subject was the “Belle Époque” Belle! The turn of the century Parisian beauty, resplendent in voluminous (if confining) finery. Content to leave realism, social comment and pictorial satire to others, he unashamedly depicted the high society mademoiselle with affection sans irony.

"LES MODES FEMININES", was published in 1902 and was an instant success. Depicted in 100 drypoint etchings, are representations of fashion from 1801 to 1900. As well as skillful contemporary hand colouring, close inspection of each etching reveals a deft craftsman, with genuine affection for his subject. These original etchings were published in an edition of 600 copies. This series, (#122 of 600) presents bright, clear and uniformly well struck drypoint etchings. The drypoint etching method results in a characteristically soft and velvety black line and texture. Each plate was designed and etched by Boutet and subsequently hand coloured by talented colourists under the direct supervision of the artist. The exquisite craftsmanship and rarity of each plate results in a beautiful and valuable addition to any collection.
