Henri
Boutet was a skillful etcher,
lithographer and designer of immense popularity. His favorite subject was
the Belle Époque Belle! The turn of the century Parisian beauty,
resplendent in voluminous (if confining) finery. Content to leave realism,
social comment and pictorial satire to others, he unashamedly depicted the
high society mademoiselle with affection sans irony.
"LES
MODES FEMININES", was published in 1902 and was an instant
success. Depicted in 100 drypoint etchings, are representations of fashion
from 1801 to 1900. As well as skillful contemporary hand colouring,
close inspection of each etching reveals a deft craftsman, with genuine
affection for his subject. These original etchings were published in
an edition of 600 copies. This series, (#122 of 600) presents bright,
clear and uniformly well struck drypoint etchings. The drypoint etching
method results in a characteristically soft and velvety black line and
texture. Each plate was designed and etched by Boutet and subsequently
hand coloured by talented colourists under the direct supervision of the
artist. The exquisite craftsmanship and rarity of each plate results in a
beautiful and valuable addition to any collection.
